No training plan = freedom and bliss

Let me start out by saying that it has been a while since I updated (can’t believe its been that long already!) because I have been very productive at home, aside from work and working out. I feel way more organized(more so than I was before) and I have a better sense of peace with my entire home. I am officially saying my spring cleaning has been finished in February! Now, I can concentrate and focus more on other things.

So, the Monday after snowboarding <sidenote – I was VERY sore after that weekend! It took a long time for my tailbone to heal> I began an 8 day workout streak. It was wonderful. Last week, I had some great workouts too, but I decreased my running and increased my biking compared to the totals of the previous week. I have a marathon training plan in my training log, but I have not been following it. One reason is because I am pretty sure I am changing my scheduled marathon in April to a half marathon. I really just feel like now is the time for me to concentrate on the half racing distance and my tri training. I am going to wait a while longer before taking part in another marathon. But the second reason and main point to all my rambling, is that having no training plan has been wonderful! There has been nothing to fret about and figure out the night before a morning workout. If its a treadmill workout, I go with an idea of what I may want to run and sometimes I run it, and other times I change my mind after my 1 mile warmup. If I voluntarily sleep in, I just do whatever I feel the energy for after work. If I don’t feel like stopping at the pool, then I will bike on the trainer at home. If I get home in time for a night run, I just take off and figure out when I feel like turning around and heading back home.

This weekend and today are a perfect example of the positive effects of no strict training plan. Saturday I was a bit sore from my long bike ride on Friday, so I just chose to forgo my normal long weekend run and ran 6 glorious miles instead. Well, I woke up today and knew I was doing an outside run at some point in the day and that was all I knew. Well it dawned on me around lunch time that I was feeling that my body was ready for a long run. Perfect day for it since I didn’t run a long run over the weekend and who knows what this weekend will have in store for me. So I decided to set out on a run and finish up a couple errands I had to do along the way. Errands on foot are much less of a hassle than driving 🙂 My last stop was 6.31 miles from my house, thus my run became a total of 12.62 miles! And every mile was awesome!

Of course I have all the knowledge of all the previous training plans I have followed so my workouts have not been unstructured. It has just been relaxing and wonderful to completely go with how my body is feeling each day. No worries over what workout I did verse what was wrote on paper. Of course, I will soon be following a structured plan in paper form again, but I will say the last couple weeks have been full of great workouts! Its very motivational and freeing to let yourself take a break from any sort of training plan for a bit and just do what you feel like doing!

I have been skiing once, maybe twice in my lifetime. However, snowboarding has always been something I wanted to learn and do. Well, yesterday was the day! I finally made it to a winter sports park in the area and got to attempt my skills at snowboarding. It was a blast! The first thing we did was take a one hour lesson, which covered the basic skills needed and gave us some direction. I had been told numerous times that snowboarding is pretty hard and it will take a while to get the hang of it. Well, after yesterday I cannot agree more! I took my share of falls…some gentle, some I am still feeling the effects of today. However, the more you do it, the smoother your ride to the bottom becomes. It takes a lot of work to try to control that snowboard! Yes, I am sore today, but it was so worth it! I love being outdoors and yesterday was the perfect day weather wise to be outside enjoying the winter season. I will definitely never be a pro at the sport, but it was a lot of fun and I hope to hit the slopes again soon!

Yep, I said it. I am going to train for and complete my first half ironman this year! I am excited! I have not officially registered yet, but I have made my decision. I am ready to devote the time and hard work to prepare for this great event. It will take place in August. I plan to follow a 20 week training plan for the HIM. Looking ahead, I have a half marathon in April, a Sprint Tri in June, and then the HIM in August.

Highlight of the day: What is better than chocolate milk? How about a free half gallon of chocolate milk! I went to the grocery store after the gym tonight just for choc milk. I only buy one brand and was not able to get it during my last grocery shop. It rang up wrong, so it was free! Love that policy!!

Well, I am looking forward to an exciting athletic year ahead!! I have participated in 20 races total since I got back into running and racing in the summer of 2007. Everything from 5ks to marathons. A big achievement for me last year was the completion of my first triathlon and my second marathon! I will admit I am a numbers guru and have kept track of all my running stats, which I am so grateful I started doing right away and have entered every mile. I love looking back on previous workouts, races, personal comments, personal records, and the mileage on my shoes…lol! I have been doing a lot of reflecting on previous achievements and races as I sketch out my path for the year ahead. What do I want to accomplish in the next 11 months? What challenges is my body ready to undertake? So many training plans and options are available. I am so grateful for all the knowledge I do hold and all the resources available at my fingertips. Well, as I am off to ponder some more, be sure to tune in again for more information on the road ahead!

Well, I have so much to write about since I have been thinking about this blog for a while now, but a race report is of high priority.  It has been a week already since my first race of 2010!

Naples, FL  January 17, 2010

Florida was a such a welcoming change from the gloomy, cold, and snowy weather I left behind. My goal for this race was to run it around 1:47, as that was my last half marathon time and my current PR. Although, I had to keep in mind that my last race was done on months of triathlon training.  I did not have that intense training leading up to this half. Alarm sounds at 4:30…snooze…snooze….alright must get up and eat to give my food time to digest. With race gear on and bagel topped with peanut butter in my stomach, me and the 2 girls I roomed with head to the hotel lobby for pre-race caffeine and to meet up with the other DIVAs. There were 9 DIVAs total who met up for this race. 8 of which all stayed at the same hotel. Pre-race photo shoot takes place as the rain pours down outside. Yes, I have run a full marathon in the rain, but I don’t want to run a Florida race in the rain. We load the vehicles and head towards the race location. Before we exit the parking garage, the rain comes to an end. We get our chips attached to our shoes and then we all gather near the start area. I jump in the crowd near the front of the pack. The gun goes off and I realize I did not move up close enough. Slow start and only a gun time start. No seperate chip start time was recorded. Once the pace of the pack of runners picks up I look at my Garmin and realize there is no pace showing. Oh yeah, it asked me if I was indoors when I turned it on and thinking nothing of it, I hit yes. I power down the Garmin and it takes a bit to restart and find signal. Somewhat disappointed that I didn’t catch my error before the race started, as now my race tracking will not be accurate. I pass the 1 mile time clock at 8:45. 30 seconds behind race goal after mile 1. I felt pretty good for a while. The layout of the course was perfect for us DIVAs, as we were able to see each other a few times along the race course. My miles are passing by, but I start doing the math in my head to find out if I am on track to my goal, how many seconds I am off, and what my time should be each time I pass a time clock. A lot of number crunching!! Not sure of the exact mileage, but I eventually hit a point in the race when I realized my body was happier with 8:20 -8:25 pace. I was not feeling as great and as speedy as I felt during my last half marathon. Don’t get me wrong, I felt fine, but I knew this race would be different. A few more miles down and I think man it is really hot and humid…but this DIVA did not care a bit as I was just happy to be running in shorts and a tank top in Florida in January. I decide to see where I am at at mile 10 and adjust accordingly. I will not make my ultimate goal of the race, but I still have a shot at coming in below 1:50. The last couple miles were rougher than expected and my legs were feeling a tad on the heavy side.  Not too much farther until the finish line, but I realize I need to kick it in super high gear to cross under 1:50. Evidently the girl running next to me had the same mentality, as we both took off. Final time was 1:49:51 (8:24/mile pace). Consistent with my past half marathon performances, but no PR. It was a great race and a race I would definitely run again!! It was an awesome weekend!! Looking forward to many more DIVA races!!

Hello and Welcome!!
